Chapter 1 Synopsis: Ellen and Annemarie are racing, and then all off the sudden two soldiers on the corner say Halte!
Then they stopped. The soldiers started asking them all these question like; What is your name? Are you a good student? then Annemarie's sister Kirsti came and the soldiers were questioning who she was. Then all the girls went home. When Annemarie arrived at her house her and Ellen had promised that they wouldn't tell their mothers. But, unfortunately Kirsti arrived before Annemarie. Ellen's mother was sitting in Annemarie's apartment with Annemarie's mother because, the two mothers were having "coffee" , hot water with tasteful herbs. Then Kirsti and Annemarietold the two mothers what had happened. They suggested to take another route to school. So, that is what the girls did.
Chapter 2 Synopsis: Annemarie is telling Kirsti a fairytale bedtime story about a Queen and King that lived together in a wonderful palace. Then Annemarie's thought turned into a real king and a real palace.
Chapter 3 Synopsis: Annemarie and Kirsti are gettingready for school. As Mrs. Johansen (Annemarie's mother) was zipping Kirsti's coat a button fell off. Mrs. Johansen asked the girls to stop by Mrs. Hirsch's buttonshop on thier way home from school. When they arrived there the store was closed, there was a sign in German writting on the front. When they arrived home they told there parents. Mrs. Johansen immediatley wen to Mrs. Rosen (Ellen's mother)about. Then Peter came late that night with gifts, and news. The news was Germans have orders closing many storesrun by Jews. It is their way of tormenting the Jews.
Chapter 4 Synopsis: In this chapter it is the Jewish New Year. Ellen skips school to go to the synagogue for the New Year. At the synagogue the rabbi told his congregation that the Nazi's have taken away the synagogue lists of all the Jews. So instead of Ellen's family having a nicechicken meal, they send Ellen to the Johansen's for the night. The Germans will be finding the jewish families that night. While Peter finds somewhere for Ellen's parentsto go Ellen will play the part of Annemarie and Kirsti's "sister". For the night just incase the Germans come looking.
Chapter 5 Synopsis:In this chapter A LOT happens. As Annemarie and Ellen are falling asleep they are discussing how Lise died. Annemarie didnt't really know, all she knew was that her and Peter were out one night and her parents got a phone call, and then Mrs. Rosen came and wtahced Kirsti and her for the night. Then late that night her parents returned with the news, that Lise was dead. Then Ellen turned and fell asleep. Annemarie stared out the window thinking. Then at around four in the morning they heard a BOOM BOOM BOOM someone was pounding on the door. It was the Nazi's. Mr. and Mrs. Johansen opened the door and the Nazi's quetioned them saying, "I understand that you are friends with your neighbors the Rosens?" Mrs. Johansen replied, "Sophy Rosen is my friend that is true." Then they asked to inspect the house. As they entered where Ellen and Annemarie were sleeping Annemarie whispered, "Ellen your necklace! Take it off!" Ellen said "it as been so long since I have taken it off." Then Annemarie said, "Hold still this is going to hurt." as she yanked the Star of David chain off her neck. The Nazi's entered and inspected. Then they asked the girls questions like, "What is your name?" Annemarie responded, "Annemarie Johansen". They asked the same question, "What is your name?" Ellen responded, "Lise, Lise Johansen." The soldiers questioned why rwo of the daughters had blonde hair and one didn't. So, papa found a photo album of all of there new born pictures teared them out and handed them to the Nazi's. They inspected and, threw them to the ground and left the apartment. They were relieved but nervous.
Chapter 6 Synopsis: The Johansen's agree to take Ellen to Uncle Henrik's in the town of Gilleje. On the train ride there the Nazi's stroll the train car and stop at the Johansen's seats. He says "Where are you going?" and mama responds "Gilleje." He then says "For the New Year?" She says "It's only October!" Then Kirsti begins to speak. Annemarie has thought flying through head like if Kirsti is going to say "It isn't our New year but it is HERS!" But, insteadall she says is "Im going to my Uncle Henrik's house!" As they arrive they take a path through the woods although it will take longer, her mom said it is much prettier. While they were walking trough the wood her Momma was explaining her childhood in this town. Then Annemarie know that just beyond the cllearing is Uncle Henrik's house she askes if they can run ahead. Momma says yes. The clasps her arm around Ellen's shoulders saying "Say we've brought a friend."
Chapter 7 Synopsis: Ellen and Annemarie arrive at Uncle Henrik's house. They go by the sea and look way across to all the way to Sweden. They think what if two girls from Sweden are looking across the sea saying that's Denmark! Then they see little tiny objects far in the distance bobbing up and down. They realize they are boats. Ellen says "I wonder if one of those are your Uncle Henrik's boats?" Then Annmarie says "Maybe, they are to far away, the name of his boat is Ingeborg for mama." Ellen asks where her necklace is and Annmearie responds saying "It is in a very safe place." Then they go to sleep.
Chapter 8 Synopsis: Momma was making fun of Uncle Henrik's housekeeping. Momma clean all of Unce Henrik's house. She beet the rugs, dusted, and opened all the windows for fresh air. When he arrived home he grinned. he was shocked to se his house so clean. Then Momma jokes around saying "Henrik you need a wife." He says "Why do I need a wife when i have a sister?" Then momma goes on about things that are wrong with his housekeeping. Then Uncle Henrik asks "Have you cleared the living room?" Momma says "Yes, it is clean and I moved the furniture to make room." Then Annemarie asks "Prepared the living room for what?" Momma says "There has been death in the family tonight, Great Aunt Birte will be resting in the living room tonight in her casket, before she is burried tomorrow. It is an old custom, for the dead to rest at their home surrounded by loved ones." Annemarie knows Great Aunt Birte just can't be real.

Chapter 9 Synopsis: Annemarie goes to the barn where Uncle Henrik is milking Blossom. She said to him "Uncle Henrik your lying to me you and Momma both." Then she explains how she knew Great-aunt Birte wasn't real. Then Uncle Henrik told her that she guessed right and Great-aunt Birte was fake. Then the hearse pulled up, and he said "It's Great-aunt Birte, who never was." "So, my little friend sre you ready for a night of mourning?" People after people were arriving at their house. Then Uncle Henrik said, "Ellen come with me." Ellen questioningly look at Momma and Momma said, "Go with Henrik." Ellen returned a while after with her parents with her! :)
Chapter 10 Synopsis: After all the people are all in the house, they her hard bug foot-steps on the floor. An officer is standing near them. They have observed and they had thought that there was and unusual amount of people gathered in their home. They then said "What is the explanation?" Momma said, "There has been death. It is always our custom to gather and pay our respects hen a family member dies. I am sure you are familiar with our customs." Then he said "Who died?" It seemed that he was looking at Annemarie when he said that. She swallowed then said "My Great-aunt Birte." "I do know your customs." he said firmly. " I also know it is a custom to pay one's respect by looking your loved one in the eye. It seems odd to me that you have the coffin closed so tightly." Then momma said, "The doctor said it should be closed, because she died of Typhus, and he said there is a chance that the germs could still possibly be there. It could be dangerous. But what does the doctor know? And dear Aunt Birte; I have been longing to see her face, to kiss her good-bye. Of course we will open the casket! I am glad you suggested-" With a swift motion he slapped momma across the face. Then he said "You foolish woman," he spat "To think that we have any interest in seeing the body of your diseased aunt! Open it after we leave," he said Then they walked out the door.
Chapter 11 Synopsis: The casket was open Annemarie peered into it and there was no body at all. Instead it was a bunch of jackets, and blankets. Peter started to distribute the jackets and blankets to everyone and said "It will be very cold." Then in groups they left Peter had one group and momma had another. Then he said leave twenty minutes after.
Chapter 12 Synopsis: Mama went first. Then led her group. Annemarie calculated the time that her mother would be home, she figured about 3:30 am. Then minuted later, she drifted to sleep. She woke up past 4:00 am. Where was Mama? She thought maybe she came home and did't want to wake me. She went upstairs and then the door to where Mama and Kirsti's room was. She creaked the door open, the kitten in Kirsti's lap jumped out. She tured, but was still asleep. Mama's side was bare. Annemarie peered out the window and saw a black blurred figure in the distance, it was Mama lying on the earth.
Chapter 13 Synopsis: Annemarie ran to her mother yelling "Mama!" Mama!" "Shh" she said "Im alright." Whats wrong what happened?" Mama explained how she was so anxious to get home to Annemarie and Kirsti. She went sprawling to the ground when she suddenly tripped over a root. She also said she probably broke her ankle. Annemarie helped her mother up and helped her walk home. They were going to call the doctor when the arrived home. As the were on the steps Annemarie noticed something lying on the steps. Mama said run this to Henrik's boat. She went inside and buried the item under a "lunch" for Henrik. Her Mama said "Run, run as fast as you can!"
Chapter 14 Synopsis: On the path trough the woods, she was thought of the story she had often told to Kirsti as they cuddled in bed at night. She was going through the whole story in her head. Then as she was at the part of the wolf growling. She stopped she heard an actual growl. She took a few steps forward. There they were 4 armed soldiers in front of her.
Chapter 15 Synopsis: As Annemarie comes across the soldiers, they stop her. They ask her where she is going and why. She says My uncle Henrik forgot his lunch. The 2 dogs the Nazi's had with them smelled something suspicious in the basket. The Soldiers tear apart the whole basket. Finally, she is left with scraps of food for her Uncle Henrik, she thankfully still has the item that she was hiding.
Chapter 16 Synopsis: uncle Henrik invited Annemarie into the barn. He explained how hid all of the people. They had a secret room on the boat, all he had to do was lift a certain board of the grund and it would lead to the extra room. Annemarie found out what the item she was hiding was. It was a hankerchief, one that if the Nazi's dogs were to take a sniff on the boat it would clog up their noses. So, they couldn't smell. If it weren't for Annemarie they could all be well, goners.
Chapter 17 Synopsis: The war is over. They are back in Copenhagen. Annemarie is 12 now and Kirsti is 7. Finally, her parents tell her the real story on how Lise died.
